How I found my way into seafood

“My mission is to share my love of seafood by helping buyers discover its variety, understand its origins, and choose products that serve their customers well.”

John Litton, Founder

I got into seafood by accident. Years ago, I spent a summer and fall working on a small shrimp boat out of Gulfport, Mississippi. We lived aboard, caught shrimp, and sometimes caught fish for dinner. When we offloaded at a small processor's dock, I loved seeing the variety of fish other boats brought in to sell. I didn't know it then, but that experience stayed with me.

Years later, while working for a large food distributor, I noticed that some of my customers bought fresh seafood from a competitor. I started asking our buyers about it. They knew little about the category, so I began learning what I could. Then I visited the seafood market in the Bronx. I was hooked.

I later worked for a company known for calamari. Alongside the squid, its boats landed fish such as black sea bass, monkfish, and scup. Seeing those catches headed to market brought back the curiosity I'd felt on the Gulfport dock.

That curiosity still drives my work. Seafood offers remarkable variety, yet many people encounter only a small part of it. I enjoy helping buyers discover products, understand where they come from, and find the right fit for their customers.
